Debbie Litwack is a journalist, author and activist. She was born on October 10th, 1955 in Brooklyn, New York to Jewish parents. Litwack attended Borough of Manhattan Community College before transferring to Columbia University to study English Literature. Litwack began her career as a writer for the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund where she worked from 1978 until 1983. Between 1984 and 1986, Litwack worked as a reporter for The Advocate magazine. In 1988, she published her first book, And Then There Were None: One Woman’s Search for Justice in the Murder of Her Family. Litwack has since written five more books including A Life Interrupted: Writings on Motherhood, Sisters, Sex and Spirituality (1999), which was nominated for a National Book Award; My Life As an Allegory (2004), which won the Lambda Literary Award for Gay and Lesbian Writing; and most recently Bearing Witness: A Memoir of the Holocaust (2012).
