A confined space is a work area with limited mobility for the entry or exit of workers. It could restrict easy navigation for work. This means that it is not designed for continuous or long-term occupancy by workers as it is dangerous. A work area is a confined space if it has any of the following characteristics:

  1. The work area must have limited openings for entry and exit.
  2. The work area usually is not intended for long-term occupancy.
  3. The work area has enough room for people to fit in and work.

Confined space Tools for Protecting Workers

There are several recommended ways to protect workers. The following are important tools that ensure the safety of workers when entering a confined space:

Reliable Rescue System

Workers may need aid when going in and out of a confined space. An organization may lower a worker in or out of a confined space. This same mechanism works as a rescue procedure as well. You may use a Rover Sewer Inspection system for subsurface sewer safety.

Emergency Medical Tools

Workplace accidents are the reason why workers get health insurance. In confined spaces, the risks of these accidents occurring are higher. This is why it is important to have emergency medical equipment on hand. Some of the most important tools include:

  • First Aid kits
  • Resuscitators
  • Stretchers
  • Bandages
  • Breathing Apparatuses

Communication Equipment

It is important for a worker going into a confined space to have good communication equipment set up. This is because certain emergencies prevent normal communication channels from working. Plus, you can’t use flares in confined spaces because of the risk involved. Some essential communication tools are:

  • Megaphones
  • Speakers
  • Communication System wires
  • Headsets
  • Communication cables

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Personal Protection Equipment usually depends on your occupation. They are important equipment that workers must wear when working for safety. Some of the most basic PPE include:

  • Gloves
  • Boots
  • Flashlights
  • Helmets
  • Eye and face protection gear
  • Knee guards

Warning Signs

Warning signs are important in every workplace. There are stationary and mobile warning signs that warn people about dangers. Warning signs need to be bright and obvious enough for workers to see them.

Monitoring Devices

Detection devices should be available to track certain situations. For example, if there is a gas leakage or a drop in oxygen, monitoring devices can save a life. These devices include:

  • Toxic Gas Meters
  • Geiger counter (for measuring radiation)
  • Oxygen monitors
  • Mercury Thermometer

Drones

Designers create drones that go into smaller and more dangerous spaces. Drones are capable of going into places that otherwise may be too risky for a worker. Lack of oxygen, toxic chemicals, radiation, and bacteria have no effect on drones. This makes them reliable gadgets in confined spaces. You can use an indoor inspection drone to make sure that spaces within a building are safe for workers.

Finally, it is important for companies to teach safety. This is because proper safety education reduces the risk of workplace hazards, especially in confined spaces.
